History of The Syriac Music Church

Music of the Syriac Orthodox Church is enriched and has a sterling history running from the beginning of our times derived from the ancient Sumerian and Acadian musical period.
Excavations proved that music in Mesopotamia began with the Sumerians in 4500 BC and that there were schools of music in that area since that time. Music used in many fields of life especially in the religious ceremonies where it played an imported role.
The Acadian octave (from one note to its equivalent in a higher register) was divided into 24-quartertones. Every eight keys formed a scale. These scales did not get over the entire octave; while they were built on the first four tones only (tetra chord). These tetra chords were combined thereafter with each other until they made up to 3000 different complete scales. A lot of them did not give musical satisfaction and were reduced to almost 200. Today about 10 are in use.
The early Christians sang different type of songs and especially from the Psaltery. It was decided in the early Church to pray and sing in Aramaic the “international” language at that time. Already though, with the establishing of Church, the Acadian seven-tones´ scale was used, the tones which came to Palestine probably with the returning Jews who were liberated by Cyrus about 539 BC. These scales have been used in Jerusalem from 444 BC.
After the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AC, the early believers moved to Antioch together with Peter the founder of Christian church of Antioch. At that time Antioch was an important bridge between east and west and the point of meeting for other cultures. After the entry of Christianity into the Middle East in the second-third Century, the Christian mass service in Antioch standardized by using the Acadian main tones but in a particular order.
Scales from Acadia took form of eight different tones, a new one for each Sunday, beginning from the Church Consecration’s Sunday (first Sunday in November). These eight scales became the basis of the oriental music which is used until today in all the Middle East, Iran, Greece, Turkey and North Africa.
Bar Dayson (154 – 222 AC) composed 150 hymns. His hymns were so popular that they were sung generations after him. He fell into conflict with the Syrian Orthodox Church management. St. Ephraim (303-373 AC) was the successor of Bar Dayson in introducing new form of music into Church and to eliminate Bar Dayson’s teachings. He wrote nearly thirty thousand hymns and established the women choir.
St. Ignatios I Nurono “the Illuminator” (68-107 AC) founded the two alternating choirs. The holy Chamoun Ibn Sabaghin from Babel entered thereafter this form to the Eastern Church in 341. He called choirs for “Chorous”. St. Ephram was followed by many famous church leaders like Rabula (360-435 AC), Shamoun Quqoyo (485-536 AC) and others. St. Jacob d’Orhoy (of Edessa) (+708) gathered all kinds of musical forms in the Syriac Orthodox Church and released them the current musical structure form.
All these hymns are protected today in the Beth Gazo (The Treasury of Chants) which contains up to 2500 different compositions, out of which about 700 or so survive. In the 1992 the Syriac Musician Nuri Iskandar released a notated Beth Gazo.

Den syrisk ortodoxa kyrkans musik är anrik och har en gedigen historia som sträcker sig ända till början av vår tidräkning då Sumer och Akkad hade sin högkultur.
Utgrävningar visar att musiken i Mesopotamien började med sumererna under 4500-talet f kr och att man redan då bildade musikskolor i området. Musiken användes vid olika tillfällen, men förekom speciellt vid religiösa ceremonier där den spelade en viktig roll.
Den akkadiska oktaven (från en ton till dess motsvarighet ett register högre) uppdelades i 24 kvartstoner. Åtta tonarter (skalor) fastställdes. Dessa skalor gick inte över hela oktaven, utan var uppbyggda endast på de fyra första tonerna (tetracord). Dessa tetracord kombinerades sedan med varandra så att man fick upp till 3000 olika fullständiga skalor. Många av skalorna lät inte musikaliskt tillfredsställande så man reducerade antalet till ca 200. Idag används endast ett 10-tal.
De första kristna sjöng olika typer av sånger ur framför allt Psaltaren. Man bestämde sig för att sjunga och be på arameiska, då ett ”internationellt” språk. Och redan då, vid grundandet av kyrkan, använde man de sjutoniga akkadiska skalorna som hade kommit till Palestina, troligtvis med de återvändande judarna som hade befriats av den persiske kungen Cyrus ca 539 f kr. Skalorna hade använts i Jerusalem sedan 444 f kr.
Efter Jerusalems förstörelse år 70 flyttade de första troende till Antiokia tillsammans med Petrus som blev grundare för den Kristna Antiokia kyrkan. Antiokia var då en viktig bro mellan öst och väst och en mötespunkt för flera andra kulturer. Efter kristendomens intåg i Mellanöstern under 200-300 talen, standardiserade man gudstjänstceremonin för den kristna mässan i Antiokia på de akkadiska grundtonarterna efter en viss ordning.
Skalorna från Akkad formades till åtta olika tonarter, en ny för varje söndag med början den första söndagen i november. Dessa åtta skalor blev också grunden till den orientaliska musiken som används än idag i hela Mellanöstern, Iran, Grekland, Turkiet och Nordafrika.

تُعد موسيقى الكنيسة السريانية الأرثوذكسية غنية ولها تاريخ عريق يمتد منذ بدايات الزمن، مستمدة من العصر الموسيقي السومري والأكدي القديم.
أثبتت الحفريات أن الموسيقى في بلاد ما بين النهرين بدأت مع السومريين حوالي سنة 4500 قبل الميلاد، وأنه كانت توجد مدارس موسيقية في تلك المنطقة منذ ذلك الحين. استُخدمت الموسيقى في مجالات عديدة من الحياة، وخاصة في الطقوس الدينية، حيث أدّت دورًا مهمًا.
كانت الأوكتاف الأكدية (من نغمة إلى ما يعادلها في طبقة أعلى) مقسّمة إلى 24 ربع نغمة. وكل ثماني درجات كوّنت سُلّمًا موسيقيًا. هذه السلالم لم تغطِ كامل الأوكتاف، بل بُنيت على أول أربع نغمات فقط (تتراكورد). وتم دمج هذه التتراكوردات مع بعضها البعض لاحقًا لتكوّن حوالي 3000 سلّم موسيقي مختلف. إلا أن العديد منها لم يكن مرضيًا موسيقيًا، فتم تقليصها إلى حوالي 200 سلّم فقط. واليوم يُستخدم منها حوالي 10.
غنى المسيحيون الأوائل أنواعًا مختلفة من الترانيم، خاصة من سفر المزامير. وقد تقرر في الكنيسة الأولى أن تُقال الصلوات وتُرتل الترانيم باللغة الآرامية، التي كانت تُعد “اللغة الدولية” في ذلك الوقت. ومع تأسيس الكنيسة، استُخدم السُلّم السباعي الأکدي، وهي نغمات يُعتقد أنها وصلت إلى فلسطين على الأرجح مع اليهود العائدين من السبي بعد تحريرهم على يد كورش حوالي سنة 539 قبل الميلاد. وقد استُخدمت هذه السلالم في أورشليم منذ سنة 444 قبل الميلاد.
بعد تدمير أورشليم سنة 70 ميلادية، انتقل المؤمنون الأوائل إلى أنطاكية برفقة بطرس، مؤسس كنيسة أنطاكية المسيحية. وكانت أنطاكية آنذاك جسرًا مهمًا بين الشرق والغرب، ومكانًا تلتقي فيه مختلف الثقافات. بعد دخول المسيحية إلى الشرق الأوسط في القرنين الثاني والثالث، تم توحيد خدمة القداس في أنطاكية باستخدام النغمات الأكدية الرئيسية ولكن بترتيب خاص.
أخذت السلالم الموسيقية الأكدية شكل ثمانية مقامات مختلفة، يُستخدم كل مقام لأحد أيام الآحاد، بدءًا من أحد تقديس الكنيسة (الأحد الأول من شهر تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر). وقد أصبحت هذه المقامات الثمانية أساسًا للموسيقى الشرقية التي ما تزال مستخدمة حتى اليوم في جميع أنحاء الشرق الأوسط، وإيران، واليونان، وتركيا، وشمال أفريقيا.
ألّف برديصان (154–222 ميلادية) 150 ترنيمة، وكانت ترانيمه مشهورة للغاية واستمرت الأجيال في غنائها من بعده. لكنه دخل في صراع مع قيادة الكنيسة السريانية الأرثوذكسية. وجاء بعده القديس أفرام السرياني (303–373 م) الذي أدخل شكلاً جديدًا من الموسيقى إلى الكنيسة وعمل على إزالة تعاليم برديصان. كتب نحو ثلاثين ألف ترنيمة وأسس جوقة النساء.
أسّس القديس إغناطيوس النوراني (68–107 م) الجوقتين المتناوبتين في الترتيل. وأدخل القديس شمعون بن صباغين من بابل هذا الشكل لاحقًا إلى الكنيسة الشرقية سنة 341 م، وأطلق على الجوقات اسم “خورس”. تلاه العديد من كبار قادة الكنيسة مثل رابولا (360–435 م)، شمعون القوقي (485–536 م)، وآخرون. جمع القديس يعقوب الرهاوي (+708) جميع أشكال الموسيقى في الكنيسة السريانية الأرثوذكسية ووضعها في هيكلها الموسيقي الحالي.
كل هذه الترانيم محفوظة اليوم في بيت گازو (خزانة الألحان)، والتي تحتوي على حوالي 2500 تركيبة موسيقية مختلفة، نجا منها ما يقارب 700. وفي عام 1992، قام الموسيقي السرياني نوري اسكندر بإصدار نسخة مدونة بالنوتة الموسيقية من بيت گازو.
